The next morning Rogan climbed the stairs at the rear of the inn and entered through the back door. The kitchen stood empty, but signs of work were evident in an array of soiled platters and bowls strewn across the countertops. Scents of cinnamon and bacon mingled with chocolate and tangy fruits. He’d skipped dinner last night and now his stomach yawned with hunger. He figured he’d make his way to the side board in the dining room as soon as he gathered the nerve to face Jessica.

Yesterday had been a disaster, and the responsibility for the debacle perched heavily upon his shoulders. He’d done a fine job of pushing Jessica away and messing up everything. The thought stung.

He hoped he might find a way to earn her forgiveness.

Rogan reached into the cabinet and located a mug. He filled it with coffee from the heated carafe. Voices drifted through the doorway from the dining room at the far end of the hall. From the muted hum, the room held a small army of guests. The breakfast buffet Jess had worked tirelessly to hone to perfection must be a hit.

Jessica rounded the corner and paused abruptly as she came face-to-face with him. “Rogan…”

“Good morning, Jess.”

The wounded look in her eyes tore at his heart. He’d spent the night tossing and turning, trying to figure things out. But with just one glance he knew…the years had done nothing to diminish the feelings he had for her. Seeing her again had merely revived them from some deep recess of his heart, as if he’d been waiting all this time for her to come home.

“I didn’t expect to find you here.” She caught her lower lip between her teeth, but not before he noticed the slightest quiver along the corners of her mouth.

Of course she hadn’t expected him. He’d been a jerk yesterday. Certifiable. He could say she’d caught him by surprise with the news of her pregnancy, but that was no excuse for the way he’d responded. His gaze drifted to her midsection, and the slight swell of her belly through the tailored cotton blouse was evident now. How far along was she and how on earth had he missed the signs?

As if she read his mind, Jessica splayed a hand across her waist.

“I’m due mid-August. I suppose I’m just beginning to show.”

“Yes, I see that.”

“I’m so sorry for springing it on you the way I did, Rogan. But it was only fair to tell you. You had to know before…” She shook her head as she waved a hand back and forth between them. “Before this strange thing we’re dancing around goes any further.”

“I never have been very good at dancing.” He captured her gaze and held tight. “But you have nothing to be sorry for, Jess. I owe you an apology.”

“OK, I won’t argue with that.” She nodded stiffly. “You hurt my feelings when you stalked out yesterday like a kid who’d just had his favorite toy taken away, without saying a word…not even goodbye.
